Overcome Nostalgia and Embrace Today

Lately, I’ve found myself in a bit of a creative slump. It’s a busy time of year with end-of-school activities, and my younger son is graduating from the eighth grade. Next year, I’ll have two boys in high school, which feels incredibly emotional for me. It marks the end of an era, a significant transition that has brought up a lot of feelings.

When my boys were little, the days felt endless and overwhelming. I could never see a way out of that busy, chaotic time. But now, looking back, it seems like it all passed in the blink of an eye. We often hear people say to cherish these moments because they go by quickly, and although it’s hard to believe at the time, it’s so true.

We tend to get nostalgic about the past, thinking of it as “the good old days.” But when we were actually living those moments, we didn’t recognize them as such. Nostalgia removes us from the anxiety and noise of the past, allowing us to remember only the highlights. It’s like looking at old pictures of our kids—they’re adorable because we’re not hearing the crying or tantrums that happened at the time.

This detachment is key to understanding presence. When we’re truly present, we can separate ourselves from our expectations, emotions, and the noise of life. We can appreciate the moment for what it is, much like how nostalgia allows us to focus on the pleasant aspects of the past.

Being present means letting go of the past and not worrying about the future. It’s about embracing the now, the only moment we truly have. We don’t live in the future; we live in a series of present moments. Reflecting on this gives us the freedom to appreciate life more fully.

When we fixate on the past or future, we miss out on the power of the present. All our power lies in how we choose to show up and serve in each moment. When I get emotional, like today, it reminds me that I still have work to do in fully embracing the present.

It’s easy to undervalue what we have and overvalue what we lack. Shifting our focus to gratitude helps us appreciate our current blessings and stop yearning for the past. The best is always yet to come because we’re continually growing and evolving.

Growth often comes with periods of retraction. Just like a flower that slightly closes before it fully blooms again, our growth involves moments of introspection and temporary setbacks. These are natural and necessary parts of our journey.

Instead of condemning our feelings or slumps, we should view them as reflections of where we need to grow. Thank the universe for these reflections and use them as opportunities for self-improvement. Grounding activities, like feeling the sun on your face or the grass under your feet, can help you reconnect with the present.

Every day is significant, not just the big milestone days. Each moment holds value and power. By recognizing this, we can stay centered and grounded, making the most of our present.
